It all started in February 2022, and I remember it like it was yesterday. As a guy, I didn’t really have many role models showing me the power of skincare or how it could transform my appearance. Growing up, skincare wasn’t something I really thought about—men’s grooming was more about shaving and deodorant. But I couldn’t ignore how my skin looked anymore. It was dry, flaky, and covered in blackheads—and I hated it. For a long time, I convinced myself that I had “perfect” skin, thinking I didn’t need a face wash or moisturizer. Looking back, I was wrong, but at the time, it felt like my skin was “just the way it was.”
The Beginning of My Skincare Journey
Maybe it was just age catching up with me, but over time, insecurities started to creep in. My skin wasn’t looking as youthful, and I could see a difference from when I was younger. My blackheads were more visible, and the dry patches on my face were more noticeable. One day, I just thought: “Enough is enough.” It was time for a change—time to step up my skincare game. So, I started looking for solutions. I spent hours online researching skincare routines, watching videos, and reading reviews. And that’s when my obsession began. I went from not caring at all about my skin to learning everything I could about how to take care of it.
Trial and Error
At first, it was all trial and error. I didn’t know where to begin, so I started with the basics. I went for some well-known, dermatologist-recommended products like Cetaphil face wash and CeraVe moisturizer. Simple, no-frills options that seemed safe for sensitive skin. But as I continued my journey, I learned that skincare is so much more than just face wash and moisturizer. It’s about balancing the right products for your skin type, dealing with specific concerns like acne or dark spots, and taking care of your skin consistently. There were definitely mistakes along the way—products that didn’t work for me, ingredients I didn’t understand—but those early days taught me the value of persistence and research.
Learning from the Community
One of the best parts of this journey was learning from the online community. Reddit became my go-to for advice, and I spent hours reading posts, discussing products, and asking questions. The skincare community online is so vast and helpful, and I learned so much from people who had been in my shoes before. Their experiences gave me confidence in my choices and helped me avoid the pitfalls that come with a skincare newbie. The more I read and engaged, the more passionate I became about learning the ins and outs of skincare. It was no longer just about trying new products—it became a hobby, a way for me to connect with others, and an exciting part of my daily routine.
